Programs for Academic Enhancement
ASA Academic Learning Communities: UNC's First Year Experience
Academic Learning Communities co-registers 25 students in two, three, or four Liberal Arts Core courses or major specific courses that work for undeclared and declared students. Some communities focus on a specific major or profession. The Office of Academic Support and Advising offers four types of communities:
- Class Act: A Learning Community for Future Elementary Teachers
- Major Connections: A Learning Community Designed to Help Students Get Started with Their Majors
- Ascent: Learning Community for Students Aiming at Professions in the Sciences
- Liberal Arts Core Connections: For students interested in theme-related courses or searching for a major
All programs provide a smooth, well-supported, and welcoming transition for new students entering UNC. Every learning community includes a one-credit elective course, FYE 108-First Year Experience.
UNC's First Year Experience course, FYE 108, helps new students understand UNC's expectations and values. Students will also consider potential careers and create a 4-year plan for a possible or declared major. This helps students see the big picture and design a course of study that fits their personal goals. The small group format allows students to:
- Connect with a group of 25 students who share several classes
- Have easy access to instructors, advisers, and tutors
- Enjoy guaranteed enrollment in high-demand courses required in the Liberal Arts Core and/or majors or pre-professional programs
- Prepare for specific careers, begin major coursework, and/or explore areas of personal interest
- Gain introductions to UNC activities, support services, computer labs, and the library
- Develop an individualized 4-year graduation plan
- Meet students with similar goals and form study groups and friendships more easily
- Learn from outstanding faculty who enjoy teaching and mentoring new students.
